Importance of Creative Expression for Children

Updated: Jul 3, 2020

Have you ever noticed how, when we talk about creative expression, we mainly think about the outcome? We equate it with a beautiful song, a well-written story, or a lovely painting. Surely these are all outcomes of creative activities, but creative expression is not just about the product. In fact, it concerns itself more with the process. As we, at Sapphire International School, listed among the top 10 CBSE schools in Noida, believe that creativity is far from the output, and primarily a journey we undertake to develop our productivity, imagination, originality, and problem-solving abilities. And, for all these reasons and more, an emphasis on creative expression is especially important in childhood.

We strongly believe that every child has an inherent creative potential and the ability to express that creativity. All we need to do is to focus on the process and not the quality of the outcomes, and it can help our children in multivariate ways. So, here, in this article today, we will outline some of the ways in which creative expression is of utmost importance for children.

Creative expression and physical development

The mention of the significance of creative expression naturally leads anyone to think about its mental health benefits. However, its importance is no less when it comes to the physical development of children. Working with things like glue, clay, strings, crayons, paints, and masking tape helps in improving their hand-eye coordination, and thereby aids in the development of fine motor skills. It also helps in building muscle memory and ensuring muscle development in kids.

Aids in the development of cognitive skills

Now, let’s come to the most crucial impact of creative expression on the young minds. Creative pursuits offer ample opportunities for children to try out their ideas, build upon their imagination, and see the results of their experimentations. Throughout this process, their minds are constantly at work: navigating through hurdles, finding solutions, and making decisions. Thus, it is like an exercise for those young brains in order to keep them well-oiled.
